Reccommended Reading & Other Resources

Sinced Operation Restore Hope began we've found some great books, films and other resources along the way that might be of interest to anyone involved with cleft surgery and/or the Philippines.

BOOKS - fiction

Precious Bane
Mary Webb
Set in Shropshire, England in 18-19th Century, gentle Prue Sarn is cursed with a hare-lip and shunned by the superstitious country folk. A beautiful tale of old country living and a sympathetic picture of a girl who lived a harsh life despite her angelic nature.

Great Philippine Jungle Energy Cafe
Alfred A Yuson
Magical novel by Alfred A. Yuson who has received eight Palanca Memorial awards for his fiction, poetry, and essays, including the grand prize in 1987 for this novel.

BOOKS - non fiction

Manila: A Memoir of Love & Loss
Purita Echevarria de Gonzalez
A good first book to read on the Philippines. Gives a lovely impression of Manila and its culture before the war, a terrifying description of what the people of Manila were subjected to during the war and insights into the development of the Manila we see today.

Fiesta
Alejandro Reyes "Anding" Roces
A National Artist of the Philippines for literature, Alejandro Reyes Anding Roces wrote this book of essays in 1980. It features folk festivals such as Ermita's Bota Flores, Aklan's Ati-atihan, and Naga's Peñafrancia.

FILMS/ DOCUMENTARIES

Back to Bataan
Wartime film about WWII, starring John Wayne and Anthony Quinn, with a Filipino cast.

Apocalypse Now

(1979)
Shot in the Philippines, using then-President Ferdinand Marco's military helicopters for many of the scenes.

Heart of Darkness
A documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now, that shows the trials and tribulations that the cast and crew suffered while filming the movie in the Philippines.
