2009 ORH Medical Mission to Manila, Philippines - 5 Years of Success

In April 2009, a team of 25 volunteers (surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses) from Australia, UK, Germany and NZ met in Manila, in the Republic of the Philippines, to conduct its fifth consecutive surgical mission. The team once again worked in the President Diosdado Macapagal Memorial Medical Centre (PDMMMC), a community hospital located in the City of Caloocan in Manila, and a total of 68 procedures on 61 patients were performed. One of Operation Restore Hope’s aims is to educate and train local surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and other hospital and medical staff in host hospitals. Renowned Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Darryl Hodgkinson conceived the ORH charity in 1992 and it has now grown internationally to include three independent organisations and program representatives:

• Operation Restore Hope - New Zealand
• Operation Restore Hope - Germany
• Operation Restore Hope - Australia

ORH – New Zealand is fortunate to have the patronage of a number of corporate supporters, who provide financial and in- kind support. Our corporate partners include the New Zealand Embassy - Manila, ASK Foundation, Cathay Pacific Airways, Air New Zealand, Philippine Airlines, Morgan Family Charitable Foundation, Abbott Laboratories, Datex Ohmeda - GE, Rotary Club of Manila, San Miguel Corporation, Noodle Marketing Creative, Dean Wright Web Design and Red Kinetics. This year’s mission focused on communication and integration with local staff, to help in achieving the long-term goal of transferring the necessary skills and, ultimately, the responsibility for local delivery of comprehensive cleft care. To this end, ORH enjoyed the participation of more than 35 local healthcare professionals and a pre-mission academic symposium that has gone from strength to strength over the last 3 years. At the request of the local physicians, the symposium is to be expanded and moved to a bigger venue at the University lecture theatre complex in 2010.

The ORH 2009 Mission was a success with an increased focus on training and building bridges. There was greater local participation within the operating theatres and plans are afoot to both increased the numbers of operating tables (without compromising patient safety), and to expand the pre-mission symposium for 2010. All participating members can feel justifiably proud of their input, without which ORH could not function. More importantly, the 400 patients operated on over the past five years would still be significantly disadvantaged.

Our work makes a real and significant difference to the lives of the underprivileged people born with cleft lip and palate in the Philippines.

ORH – NZ Medical Mission to Manila is scheduled on 11 – 17 April 2010.
